How to Get Your AI Receptionist Phone Number

Updated 6 October 2026

Summary

Australian business phone numbers require a quick one-time carrier registration before they can go live — your business details, a few documents, and a carrier review (usually a few business days, sometimes longer; we email you as soon as the carrier replies). Once approved, you pay for your plan and choose your own Australian number inside Salutant, and your AI Receptionist is ready to take calls. This guide walks through every step.

Before you start

Your own Australian number comes with your Salutant plan. You pay nothing until the carrier approves your registration; then you pay for your plan and pick your number. Until then, test calls in your browser are free while you set up.

The carrier registration is a regulatory requirement for Australian business phone numbers — not a Salutant rule — and you only complete it once.

What you'll need

Have these ready before you begin so you can finish in one sitting:

  • Your registered business name and ABN or ACN — the 11-digit ABN or 9-digit ACN on your company registration extract. If you trade through a trust, use the company's number, not the trust's.
  • A business website (a business Facebook or Instagram page also works)
  • A physical Australian street address for the business (a PO box cannot be used)
  • An authorised representative — and whether that person is a director on the company registration extract
  • Three documents:

- Company registration extract — your ASIC current company extract: the long form that lists directors and the address

- Proof of address — a bill, rates notice, lease or rent receipt showing the practice's street address

- Photo ID for the authorised representative — driver licence or passport, not expired, with the name matching exactly

  • One extra document only if the authorised representative is *not* a director: a letter of authorisation, signed by a director named on the extract. If they are a director, no letter is needed.

Step 1 — Choose a plan

In setup, the Plan step comes after your test call. Pick the plan that fits your practice: see Salutant pricing. You pay for it only after the carrier approves your registration.

Step 2 — Open the Number step

Go to the Number step in setup. You'll see "Let's get you a number."

Step 3 — Enter your business details

Fill in your business name, ABN or ACN, website, street address and postcode, and your contact details exactly as they appear on your company registration, then say whether you're a director on the company registration extract. Your details are saved, so you can pick up where you left off.

Step 4 — Upload your documents

Upload the company registration extract, proof of address and your photo ID (plus the letter of authorisation if required). Your documents go straight to the carrier so they can check who you are. Salutant doesn't keep copies.

Step 5 — Submit for review

Check your details match your registration and send them. The carrier review usually takes a few business days, sometimes longer. We email you as soon as the carrier replies. There's nothing for you to do while you wait, and the Number step shows what they said.

Step 6 — Choose your number

Once approved, pay for your plan, then pick your number. Search by state, suburb or town, and digits if you like, then choose the one you want. Its area is fixed once you choose it, so pick one callers will know as local.

Step 7 — You're live

Calls to your new number now come to your receptionist. Try it: ring it from your mobile. Next, forward your practice line so your clients keep calling the number they know — now or later.

How long does the whole process take?

Entering your details and uploading documents takes about ten minutes. The carrier review is the only real wait: usually a few business days, sometimes longer. We email you as soon as the carrier replies. Choosing your number afterwards is instant.

Changing your number later

If you need a different number, contact us and we'll talk it through with you.

If you cancel your Salutant plan, your number takes voicemail only for 30 days after your plan ends, then it's released. Choose a plan in that time to keep it. If your practice line forwards to the number, ask your phone provider to stop before it's released.

Once your number is live, connect your practice software so your receptionist can check real-time availability and book appointments.
